How is Tally Customization Done?
Tally ERP 9 is designed to be a customizable platform. It includes an execution kernel, interpreter, and the Tally Definition Language (TDL). TDL allows for modifying Tally’s default behavior. Tally ERP 9 also supports DLLs, XSLT, ODBC, and data imports/exports in XML and CSV formats. Integration is made easy with SOAP listeners for online and third-party tool connections.

Some businesses have specific needs that may not be available in the default Tally system. It's essential to first consult your Tally Service Provider or an experienced Tally Expert to determine if these requirements can be addressed through the default features or if Tally Customisation is necessary.
For example, adding extra columns or modifying invoices to adhere to specific industry standards may require customisation of your Tally ERP 9 invoice. Similarly, in a Manufacturing business, there are functions like Inventory management, Bill of Materials (BOM), and other processes that Tally ERP 9 doesn't natively support. These might require customisation to fit your business needs.
In many cases, these requirements can be met with available Solution Boosters or add-ons. By using these pre-built tools, you can avoid the need for multiple customisations and reduce the complexity of ongoing customisation efforts.
Tally ERP 9 offers numerous features that can be activated or deactivated based on your needs. To do this, go to the Gateway of Tally screen and press F11 (Features). You can then alter specific settings such as Accounting Settings with the F1 option, Inventory Management using F2, and Statutory options with the F3 option.
Tally provides hundreds of default features accessible from the F11 menu. However, some businesses have unique needs that go beyond what the default options provide. These can be addressed by customising your Tally software.
